FF3300 is a communications design practice and an independent magazine.
The partners are Alessandro Tartaglia, Carlotta Latessa and Nicolò Loprieno and their practice works in the area of designing visual communication systems for firms and public authorities. The magazine focuses on promoting and disseminating topics related to visual communication design, cutting across the barriers of techniques and languages.

How did the FF3300 project get started?
The practice followed on from the publication, which we launched in September 2006. In 2009, the informal group that was behind the magazine made use of the opportunity offered by the Region of Apulia’s public “Active Principles” call to found a company and start really doing design work professionally.
We had some difficulty to begin with, mostly because the economic situation meant that it was hardly the most conducive time to set up a new business. Luckily for us, though, we had plenty of opportunities to show our faces: we took care of the communications for the International Festival of the Worlds at Andria, Castel del Monte, then we did the communications campaign for the Democratic Party primaries in Apulia for the regional Minister of Transparency and Citizenry, Guglielmo Minervini, as well as the one for the President of the Region, Nichi Vendola. More recently, we also covered the communications for the World Youth Meeting in Bari.

What approach to visual communications underlies your projects?
We create communication systems, often open ones, for firms and public authorities. In practice, we have often found ourselves working in the area of culture: it may even have been the best side of our adventure. We think that communicating about the theatre, politics and democracy offers our profession some of its most interesting challenges.
Our approach is a simple one: we believe in the power of ideas, in method and in culture; we think that designing communications is a question of linguistics and that each form of graphic representation is a form of writing.

Is there any bond between your work, your origins, your training and the region where you operate?
There are three of us in our office, all with different training backgrounds: the ISIA in Urbino, the IUAV in Venice, and La Sapienza University in Rome. We believe that this is of enormous benefit to us, both because it implies that we bring different vantage points to things and because we have learned different design methods and skills.
Our aim is to share our knowledge, while guaranteeing that we retain freedom and plurality of viewpoints and, at the same time, sharing our methods: the method we use to tackle design is crucial.

FF3300 is also the name of the magazine you publish. How did that publishing venture get started?
A great many words have been spoken and written about this publishing venture over the years. Basically, it is a free independent magazine that discusses things concerned with design, with cross-fertilisation between idioms and with the transverse applicability of disciplines. We have always tried to guarantee a quality product, giving plenty of space to contents in particular and to words and thoughts in general.
We think that it’s important to look at an image, but more important to understand why that image came out the way it did.
