Gardens of Sand
Museu Valencià de la Illustració i de la Modernitat (MuVIM)
The journey east through Istanbul, Smyrna, Luxor, Cairo, Tunis, Beirut, Damascus and Mecca opens this photographic documentation of the Middle East, which examines the archaeological past, the Orientalist perspective and how the 20th century would unfold in the region. Beginning in the mid-19th century, more than two hundred and eighty photographers of Armenian, Egyptian, English, Turkish, French, Greek, German, Italian, Persian and Arabic origin were actively working in the area, giving expression to their fascination with the Middle East through images. The show is a project headed by the Turner publishing house and directed by Clark Worswick, a photographer from New York.
