As far as contemporary design goes, the British scene is one of the most diverse and marked by the greatest number of influences and references. When Mark Valli contemplated the list of important designers currently working in the United Kingdom (Mark Farrow, Sea, Spin, Browns, Fuel, James Joyce, Zak, Studio8, NB Studio, Bibliothèque, Pentagram and others), he noticed that practically all of them have a studio in London, but almost none of them are natives of the British capital. At the moment, London is the epicentre of British design and a global reference point that connects designers through conferences, lectures and exhibitions. These connections and influences formalise a style, which has absorbed the teachings of Swiss and German international design, American design and other modern tendencies to transform them into new and vibrant forms.
The projects presented in this book are absolutely radical and correspond to one of the most daring professional models in contemporary design for a sophisticated and cosmopolitan clientele that demands avant-garde graphic solutions with a strong, market impact. This has exerted a powerful influence on the realisation of remarkable results. Despite the diversity of solutions and styles, there is no predominant design discourse characterising the current British scene.
Each section in the book focuses on a specific designer or studio and includes a selection of projects, a link and a short interview about their introduction to the design world, where they come from, the city they work in, their influences, the changes they have observed in the world of British design over the past decade and its distinguishing traits.
