The Big Issue, the magazine sold by homeless people on Britain’s streets, has relaunched with a new look developed by freelance editorial designer Ingrid Shields and Dennis Publishing in-house designers. Now 20 years old, it’s the first time the magazine has seen such a radical shift in its design, with the focus being firmly on the cover. This has taken the bold graphic approach of constructivism to give it a more confrontational and graphic look, reflecting a shift to deeper and more political content. The colour palette has been reduced to black, white and red and there will be a great emphasis on illustration in a bid to help it stand out from the increasingly crowded giveaway-magazine market. The first redesigned issue features an illustration by Noma Bar, and is designed to have the impact of a poster rather than compete with newsstand titles.
